Brazil 1-1 Morocco: Vinícius Rescues the Seleção Against a Bold Morocco
Trailing the African champions and outplayed for half an hour, Carlo Ancelotti's men owe their point to a flash of brilliance from Vinícius Júnior.
In the opening clash between two of the planet's ten best nations, it was Morocco who left the stronger impression. But Brazil, jittery and outplayed for long spells, leaned once again on their attacking genius: a sumptuous goal from Vinícius Júnior allowed the Seleção to snatch a 1-1 draw on their entry into the 2026 World Cup.
Morocco strike, Vinícius responds
The script favoured the Atlas Lions for a long time. High pressing, aggression, organisation: Morocco dominated the first half-hour and exposed the fragilities of a Brazil unable to impose their game. The reward came in the 21st minute. From a Brazilian turnover, Brahim Díaz slipped a perfect pass between the two centre-backs; sent through on goal, Ismael Saibari took a touch and then lobbed Alisson Becker with a sumptuous chip.
Brazil's response, meanwhile, came down to a single piece of magic. In the 32nd minute, Vinícius Júnior received the ball on the left, beat his marker with a feint, then curled a right-footed shot into the top corner, beyond the reach of Yassine Bounou. A goal against the run of play, but a goal of the very highest class.
The rest of the contest was a high-quality, end-to-end affair. Morocco kept threatening in transition, notably through Achraf Hakimi, while Brazil created their best chances after the break, almost always through Vinícius. On the hour mark, the winger picked out Raphinha perfectly through the middle, but he shot first time instead of controlling, straight into Bounou's arms.
Receiving the ball on the left with one defender in front of him and two others lurking, Vinícius Júnior created a goal out of nothing: an inside cut, space won, and a curling right-footed strike into the far top corner.
Two heavyweights, a first real test
The fixture had plenty to whet the appetite: the first World Cup match pitting two top-10 nations against each other, Brazil and Morocco. On one side, the five-time world champions, chasing a sixth title in the very first World Cup for Carlo Ancelotti in the auriverde dugout. On the other, the African champions, back after their run to the semi-finals in 2022.
Brazil arrived with a golden statistic: no defeat in their opening match since 1934, a run of 21 opening games unbeaten. A tradition preserved, but the hard way.
Nerves, and already the pressure on Ancelotti
At the final whistle, the verdict was harsh on the Brazilian side. Carlo Ancelotti pointed to his players' nervousness and admitted his team were very unbalanced in the first half. The second half was better, but Brazil remain a long way short of their standards.
Vinícius himself made no excuses: Brazil started badly, moved badly, and held the ball far too little. Morocco, for their part, leave with more than a point: confirmation of their level and of their ability to make the very best suffer.
You don't win a World Cup on your first match.

A Group C already led by Scotland
The draw leaves Brazil and Morocco a point behind Scotland, who beat Haiti in the group's other match. The Seleção will take on Haiti on Friday in Philadelphia to get back on track, while Morocco face the Scots in a hotly anticipated test.
Morocco leave with a point and plenty of positive lessons; Brazil, for their part, with a point and a great many questions. Everything is still to be built, but it will need to be built quickly.
