Algeria come from behind to beat Jordan and stay alive
Algeria trailed Jordan, but half-time changes transformed the match: Benbouali and Gouiri turned it around to revive the Fennecs in Group J.
Jordan struck first in the 36th minute through Nizar Al Rashdan’s long-range shot, the country’s first ever World Cup goal. Algeria had dominated possession and territory but lacked precision before the break. Vladimir Petković changed the game at half-time by sending on Bentaleb and Benbouali. Benbouali headed in Mahrez’s corner, then Gouiri finished a scramble in the box, with VAR confirming the winner.
The turning point came from Petković’s bench. Benbouali entered at half-time and scored 23 minutes later. On a difficult night, Algeria’s depth changed the match.
Argentina have secured top spot. Algeria will face Austria in a direct fight for second place, while Jordan are eliminated but leave with a historic goal and respect.
This win gives Algeria oxygen and sets up a charged meeting with Austria, carrying the old memory of Gijón 1982.
