World Cup 2026 · Group D · Matchday 1
Australia 2-0 Turkey: The Socceroos' Defensive Masterclass
Outplayed in every department, the Australians weathered 30 shots and 72% possession to win 2-0. A debutant goalkeeper turned hero, a record-breaking scorer, and top spot in Group D.
No one gave them a chance, and yet. In Vancouver, Australia pulled off a stunning upset, beating a vastly dominant Turkey 2-0 that simply could not find the net. Inspired by a magnificent Patrick Beach in goal and a record-breaking strike from Nestory Irankunda, the Socceroos got their World Cup 2026 off to the perfect start.
Turkey push, Australia punish and hold firm
The match turned into a siege. Turkey, back at a World Cup after a twenty-four-year absence, took a grip on proceedings with Arda Güler pulling the strings: 72% possession, 30 attempts, and yet not a single goal. The Australian wall never buckled: 55 clearances, a flawless shape, and a goalkeeper in dazzling form.
Against the run of play, Australia struck in the 27th minute. Released by Paul Okon-Engstler, Nestory Irankunda beat the Turkish defence for pace before slipping a low shot beyond the reach of Uğurcan Çakır. Then, with a quarter of an hour to play, Connor Metcalfe sealed the win with a long-range effort kept low along the ground.
In the second half, Vincenzo Montella threw on Kenan Yıldız at the break to force the issue, and the pressure mounted. To no avail: on a dangerous Güler free-kick in the 57th minute, it was Beach again who said no. Australia, for their part, created little, but converted what they did fashion.
At 20, Nestory Irankunda became the youngest goalscorer in Australia's World Cup history. His celebration on the corner flag, a heartfelt tribute to Tim Cahill, gave the goal the feel of a passing of the torch.
Popovic's wild gamble in goal
The real twist came from the team sheet. While Mathew Ryan, the 104-cap captain, seemed undroppable, Tony Popovic opted for Patrick Beach, 22, regarded as the third-choice keeper and without a single competitive cap. A bold gamble that proved visionary.
Popovic's relief, Beach's fairytale
At the final whistle, Tony Popovic said he was delighted while already looking ahead to the next challenge, against the United States. The coach praised the composure of his young goalkeeper and the youth of his squad. For Beach, who made eight saves on his third cap, it was a genuine fairytale on the biggest stage of all.
It was pretty special to see these young lads combine to score that goal.

Neck and neck with the United States atop Group D
The win sends Australia top of Group D, level on points with co-hosts the United States, 4-1 winners over Paraguay. The two leaders meet on Friday 19 June in Seattle, in a top-of-the-table clash. For Turkey, the regrets are immense: to dominate so heavily and leave without scoring already leaves little margin for error.
Australia leave with three points and a new hero; Turkey, with huge regrets despite their sterile dominance. At this World Cup, discipline and composure remain weapons.
